നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള വ്യാപാരികളെ ആകർഷിച്ചതുപോലെ സുഗന്ധവ്യഞ്ജനങ്ങളുടെയും കയർ , തേങ്ങ എന്നിവയുടെ നാടായ മലബാർ ഇന്ന് സഞ്ചാരികളെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നു . പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിനും അറേബ്യൻ കടലിനും ഇടയിലുള്ള മലബാർ ഭാരതപ്പുഴയുടെ വടക്കുഭാഗത്ത് , തൃശൂർ , പാലക്കാട് , മലപ്പുറം , കോഴിക്കോട് , വയനാട് , കണ്ണൂർ , കാസർകോട് ജില്ലകളിൽ വ്യാപിച്ചുകിടക്കുന്നു . 12 - ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ അവരുടെ പതനകാലം വരെ ഈ രാജ്യം ചേരന്മാരുടെ ഭരണത്തിൻ കീഴിലായിരുന്നു . വടക്കേ മലബാറിലെ കോലത്തിരി , കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ സാമൂതിരി , വള്ളുവനാട്ടിലെ വള്ളുവക്കോനാതിരി എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഓരോന്നും ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ കീഴിൽ മൂന്ന് ഭാഗങ്ങളായി വിഭജിക്കപ്പെട്ടു . ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ലോകവുമായുള്ള വ്യാപാര ബന്ധങ്ങൾ അഭിവൃദ്ധി പ്രാപിക്കുകയും അവരോടൊപ്പം സാംസ്കാരിക കണ്ടുപിടിത്തങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടുവരികയും ചെയ്തു , അതിന്റെ അടയാളങ്ങൾ ഇന്നും ദൃശ്യമാണ് . പാചകരീതി മുതൽ വസ്ത്രം വരെ കേരളത്തെ ഇന്നത്തെ അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് രൂപപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിൽ മലബാർ ഒരു അവിഭാജ്യ പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നതിൽ സംശയമില്ല .  

  മലബാർ ജില്ല , മലയാളം ജില്ല എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു , ബോംബെ പ്രസിഡൻസി (1792-1800) , മദ്രാസ് പ്രസിഡൻസി (1800-1947) എന്നിവയുടെ തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ മലബാർ തീരത്തുള്ള ഒരു ഭരണപരമായ ജില്ലയാണ് , സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മദ്രാസ് സ്റ്റേറ്റ് (1947-1956). പഴയ മദ്രാസ് സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ളതും മൂന്നാമത്തെ വലിയ ജില്ലയും ആയിരുന്നു അത്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ജില്ലയിൽ ഇന്നത്തെ കണ്ണൂർ , കോഴിക്കോട് , വയനാട് , മലപ്പുറം , പാലക്കാട് (ചിറ്റൂർ ടൗൺ ഒഴികെ) , ചാവക്കാട് താലൂക്ക് , തൃശൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ താലൂക്കിന്റെ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ (പൊന്നാനി താലൂക്കിന്റെ മുൻ ഭാഗം) , എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചി പ്രദേശം എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇന്നത്തെ കേരള സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ വടക്കൻ , മധ്യ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും ലക്ഷദ്വീപ് ദ്വീപുകളിലും തമിഴ്‌നാട്ടിലെ നീലഗിരി ജില്ലയുടെ വലിയൊരു ഭാഗത്തും. തെക്കൻ കേരളത്തിലെ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ രാജ്യത്തിനകത്തുള്ള ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കോളനികളായിരുന്ന തങ്കശ്ശേരിയുടേയും അഞ്ചുതെങ്ങുകളുടേയും വേർപെട്ട വാസസ്ഥലങ്ങളും 1927 വരെ മലബാർ ജില്ലയുടെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് മലബാർ ജില്ലയിലെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ഭാഷയായിരുന്നു മലയാളം. മലയാള
